brainstorming ideas

pyramid planning (generating ideas starting alone, then working with one other, then sharing ideas in a group of 4… and so on)

creating a mind map

designing and using questionnaires or surveys to gather information for a report or other piece of writing

developing questions collaboratively, which can then be used to structure writing at the ‘scribing’ stage

using pictures to prompt memories, discussion, ideas

designing and undertaking an interview to gather ideas for a written piece

learners devise and take part in a role play or short scene

look at short poems with a set structure (e.g. haiku or acrostic poems) to use as a model for writing
